Who says Napa Valley is only for wine drinkers?

Last weekend I went with a good friend of mine, Caira, to Calistoga; a sleeply little town on the north end of the Napa valley here arcross the bay. Napa, as many of you know it, is famous for it's wine. Some of the most tantilizing grapes sour their juices in order to be in the Napa valley leauge of fine drink. However, as I discovered last weekend, the goodness of Napa spreads far greater than its reds and whites, it is laced with breathtaking vineyard vistas, medieval catles, farmer's markets, natural wonders, thermal mineral waters and delicious food.

Friday night Caira and I got a hotel room in Calistoga because she was helping out a her boss's relay early in the morning. So while she was off being a do-gooder, I slept in, went jogging and ate a tasty breakfast, all along being so pleased to be in such a beautiful part of the world. Once Caira got back we explored the town and discovered not only a great little farmer's market, but also a tamale festival! We spent more money than we should have and had a great time of it!

I was greatful to be exploring this region with an experienced friend because she showed me the delights of Olive oil tasting. Who knew?! Olive oils come in an array of delicious flavors that delight the pallet. I fell in love with several flavors, knowing that they would instantly turn me into a gourmet chef, but limited myself to just one bottle.

We stopped at a vineyard that boasts a castle of significant portortion and extreme authenticity. The owner spent 15 years building it to be just like a real 800 year old castle. If he couldn't find an original old material, then he would have the piece constructed using the same methods that were practiced 800 years ago. It is an amazing eddifice.

Our explorations included more olive oil tasting, cheese and chocolate tasting and a picnick in the yard of a beautiful winery. It was such a good time. I loved it. Not to mention that the weather was perfect. I loved it! I am still smiling. Did I mention I loved it? I Hope you are having fun weekend trips too!

  2. Thanks for posting this. We haven't been up to Napa yet, but I want to go sometime. It's nice to know that there's plenty to do other than taste wine, especially since Jon's not much of a wine drinker.
