The Rock

Someone told me this week that a blog is not to satisfy the masses, it is simply to put thoughts in writing. I hope it's at least somewhat satisfying.

I went to Alcatraz this last weekend and found it to be absolutely fascinating. Now I have a thirst to learn more and am planning on getting a library card this week. What a history!

As I was walking up and down the cell blocks, I found it hard to imagine what it would truly be like. It is one thing to be there, to stand in the cell where someone was once imprisioned, but it is something entirely different to actually live in that small cell, day in and day out, year after year. To be alone with gray cinder block walls, little peronsal interaction, and with little to occupy your thoughts but the choices that brought you there.... What made these men become who they were? Whay did they make the choices they did? Did they ever regret it...?

They say that the most one the greatest tortures of this confinement was to see the lively city just out of reach, across only but a mile of bitterly cold water. When the inmates were quiet, music and laughter would float across and dance in the ears of the convicts-sounds of the life they once had enjoyed.

I recommend that everyone visit Alcatraz when they visit me in SF. It is quite the place, with quite the story.
